Event started this Friday (24th April) in Brasília and ends on Sunday; Lula withdrew from participating in the meeting after removing a skin tumor from his head, but sent a video to the militants
The Workers’ Party opened its 8th National Congress on Friday night (April 24, 2026) with an event in Brasília. Internal discussions will take place until Sunday (26 April). The expectation is, the electoral tactics in 2026 and Brazil’s role in the world.
The main absence was that of the president. The PT member is recovering in São Paulo from surgery in which he suffered a skin tumor on his head. The government official was instructed to return to his public activities only on Monday (April 27). Lula sent a video that was shown to activists during the event.
In it, the PT member says that the government’s strategy for the election involves comparing its own legacy with that of its opponents. PT’s national president, Edinho Silva, endorsed this point of view.
He said it was necessary to establish a comparison between the governments of (PL) and Lula. “We have to compare the Brazil of reconstruction, of President Lula, with the Brazil of destruction, of the Bolsonaro family. This comparison needs to be made”he declared in his opening speech at the congress. Edinho returned to stamp as “ultraireite” e “fascist” Bolsonaroism, which has senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) as a pre-candidate for the Presidency in this year’s elections.
