Argentine Chancellor reacted after the British reaffirmed to the Pentagon that they have sovereignty over the territory
The Argentine Foreign Minister, proposed on Friday (April 24, 2026) the resumption of bilateral negotiations with the United Kingdom on the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands – also known as the Falkland Islands. The archipelago is located in the South Atlantic, approximately 500 km from the Argentine coast.
“The Argentine Republic once again expresses its willingness to resume bilateral negotiations with the United Kingdom to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute and end the special and particular colonial situation in which they are immersed”stated the minister on X (formerly Twitter).
Quirno’s publication is a response to a statement from a spokesman for the British Prime Minister (Labour Party, center-left), who had stated that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands belongs to the United Kingdom.
This statement came about because of an internal Pentagon email.
According to information from the agency, the email suggested reviewing the United States’ position on the Falkland Islands as a form of punishment for the British government for its position regarding the war in Iran.
Since 1833, the Falkland Islands have been considered a British overseas territory. However, they are claimed by Argentina, which has the support of Brazil and 11 other South American countries.
On November 22, 2023, the South American group signed the pact, which reaffirms support for Argentina and opposes the United Kingdom’s military presence in the region.
In a referendum called in 2013, more than 99% of the island’s residents voted to remain under British rule. In his statement, Quirno stated that the claim is invalid, since, according to him, the population of the islands was “implanted” by the United Kingdom.
“The current inhabitants of the Falkland Islands have never been recognized as a ‘people’ by the United Nations. It is not acceptable for the islanders to become arbiters of a territorial dispute in which their own country, as a deployed population, is a party. Therefore, the intended 2013 “referendum” is also void.”he declared.
Argentina is also against the exploitation of natural resources in the region by the British company Rockhopper Exploration and the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum. Both drill for oil in the Sea Lion field, located north of the Falkland Islands. For Buenos Aires, exploration activities are unaware of the “Argentine sovereign rights”.
