Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakhchi will travel to Moscow, where he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Referring to the ISNA agency, AFP reported on this on Sunday.
According to Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazim Jalali, Arakhchi is in Moscow to present a report on negotiations to end the conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel, and to consult on the latest developments in these negotiations and issues of the ceasefire.
Minister’s regional tour
The visit to the Russian capital is part of a tour that Arákchi began on Friday, April 24, in Islamabad, Pakistan, continued with negotiations in Oman and a series of phone calls with his counterparts in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
According to the AP agency, the main topic of the negotiations in Oman was the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is trying to push through a proposal to impose fees on ships sailing through the strait.
An Omani perspective on the conflict
Oman’s position on the matter was not immediately known. Omani Sultan Haisham bin Tariq Saeed, after a meeting with Iran’s foreign minister, expressed hope for a “quick and definitive end to the war and the return of stability and security to the region.” According to him, Oman is ready to provide assistance in this regard.
An AP source said Iran is insisting on an end to US sanctions before a new round of talks begins, and that mediators led by Pakistan are trying to bridge significant differences between the two sides.
Tensions with the United States
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had canceled the planned trip of his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad. According to Trump, the United States has all the trump cards. He said he canceled the trip of the American team because of Iran’s stance on the negotiations.
