In a duel between the elite of the new generation of world tennis valid for the third round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Brazilian João Fonseca, 19 years old and 31st in the ATP (Tennis Professionals Association) rankings, lost to Spaniard Rafael Jódar, also 19 years old and 42nd in the world.
Born in Madrid and counting on the support of the fans in his favor, Jódar won the first meeting between the two young tennis players on the international circuit by 2 sets to 1, with scores of 7/6 (4), 4/6 and 6/1, in 2h07 of play.
João debuted directly in the third round of the Masters 1000 level tournament. He did not need to compete in the first round, as he was seeded, nor in the second, after his opponent Marin Cilic withdrew from the duel due to food poisoning.
The Brazilian and the Spaniard have in common the fact that they won the US Open youth, João in 2023, and Jódar in 2024.
