Iran blames the US for the failure of Pakistan’s peace talks and warns of the importance of the Strait of Hormuz. Arákčí also seeks support from Putin in St. Petersburg.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakhchi on Monday blamed the United States for the failure of talks to end the war held in Pakistan this month. At the same time, during a visit to St. Petersburg, he called the Strait of Hormuz an “important global topic”. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
“The approaches of the US made the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, unable to achieve its goals due to excessive demands,” Arákčí said.
Negotiations in Pakistan ended without an agreement
The head of Iranian diplomacy arrived in St. Petersburg on Monday, where he is to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Arakchi says he wants to resume face-to-face consultations with Iran’s “Russian friends” after a hiatus due to travel disruptions caused by the war.
On April 11, Pakistan, as a mediator, hosted talks between representatives of the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East. These negotiations ended after 21 hours without reaching an agreement.
Trump canceled the trip of his envoys
So far, another round of negotiations has not taken place, and US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had canceled the planned trip of his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he wrote that there is “huge internal strife and confusion” within Iran’s leadership. “No one knows who is ruling there, not even they themselves,” he claimed, adding that if the Iranians want to negotiate, they just need to make a phone call.
Before Trump announced the cancellation of the envoys’ trip to Pakistan, Arakhchi left Islamabad, where he held talks with local officials, and according to Iranian media reports, he plans to return to Pakistan for further talks.
