The request was made through a letter to the CEO and cites concerns about negotiations between big tech and the US government
More than 500 Google employees sent, this Monday (April 27, 2026), a letter to the CEO, Sandar Pichai, asking that the AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology developed in the company not be used by the Pentagon to “confidential work”. According to the order, technology must be used for the benefit of humanity and not to cause harm. Here is the letter (PDF – 141 kB).
According to the text, employees mention that they are “deeply concerned” with negotiations between Google and the United States Department of Defense. “As people working with AI, we know that these systems can centralize power and that they make mistakes. We feel that our proximity to this technology creates a responsibility to highlight and prevent its unethical and dangerous uses.”they wrote.
The situation resembles the from Anthropic, developer of AI Claude, with the Department of Defense in February. According to the company, the agency required agreement to use the tool to “any legal use”.
Anthropic rejected the initial contract and a later revised version, saying the terms did not guarantee that Claude would not be used for mass surveillance of the population. At the time of publication, none of the parties involved had commented on the case.
