O President of the United States, Donald Trump, I affirmu this Tuesday (28) that his country “has no friends closer than the British”, as he welcomed King Charles III to the White House, amid bilateral tensions due to the war in the Middle East.

In his welcome speech, which included a 21-gun salute, the Trump’s tone was far removed from recent criticism directed at the British government for not joining the conflict with Iran.

“In the centuries that have passed since we gained our independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British,” declared Trump on this visit marking the 250th anniversary of the liberation of the American colonies from British rule.

Trump used the famous phrase of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchillwho once said that the two countries had a “special relationship”. “Let’s hope it always stays like this,” he added.

O Republican president praised the British Army: “No one fought better alongside” the United States, despite having recently mocked British aircraft carrierswhich he classified as “toys”.

On the second of four days of this state visit, Charles III is expected to go to the United States Congress, where he will give a speech that will include a call for “reconciliation and renewal” of deteriorating bilateral relations.
