Will this be the end of diamond rings? Gen Z is getting engagement tattoos

More and more young couples prefer tattoos or cheaper stones than diamonds for engagement rings.

A growing number of Gen Z and millennial couples are abandon traditional diamond engagement ringsopting for tattoos that symbolize commitment.

According to new data from , about a quarter of younger adults would consider replacing a physical engagement ring with a tattoowhile 26% would give up rings in favor of experiences such as travel. Also approximately 30% are open to using stones other than diamonds.

Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are playing a key role in accelerating this trend. Around 61% of respondents said that these platforms reshaped marriage proposal cultureoften encouraging couples to find unique ways to express their commitment.

Tattooed rings eliminate worries about cost, loss or maintenance. Lindsay Beck from California opted for a heart-shaped tattoo made by her husband instead of buying an expensive ring.

“I don’t care about real rings. No need to spend 10 thousand dollars on a wedding ring these days,” she explains to , adding that she and her husband would rather spend their money on travel than on fancy jewelry or an ostentatious wedding.

Relationship experts say the trend reflects deeper cultural shifts. Clay Brigance, a licensed therapist, notes that younger generations are less inclined to follow traditions for their own sake. Instead, they are focusing on choices that feel authentic and meaningful for their relationships.

“Marriage is becoming less of a social script and more of a personal agreement. ring itself predicts nothing — the process behind the decision, yes”, said Brigance, highlighting that such decisions generally reflect a strong harmony between the partners.

Despite the change, the concept of symbolic commitment has not disappeared. Even among those who adopt alternatives, many still value having some visible sign of their relationship. Rather than abandoning tradition altogether, younger couples appear to be reshaping it to better reflect their values.
