The continued impasse over negotiations for a definitive ceasefire between the United States and Iran and the permanent closure of the Strait of Hormuz has raised the price of a barrel of oil and resulted in a rise in the price of gasoline for Americans to levels not seen since August 2022.

According to daily monitoring carried out by the American Automotive Association (AAA), the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the country today reached US$4.229. This level was last observed in the months following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In some North American states, however, this value is already well above US$5, such as California (US$5,983), Hawaii (US$5,634) and Washington (US$5,539).
The record for the average price of gasoline in the USA is from June 2022, when a gallon cost US$5.016, attributed to the effects of the energy shock caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
