Senator Sergio Moro (PL-PR) defended this Wednesday, 29th, that the Senate reject the name of Jorge Messias and that the nomination of the open vacancy for the Federal Supreme Court (STF) falls to the next elected president. According to the senator, this would align the nomination with the popular will.
“I have nothing against Your Excellency, but I understand that this is not the time to fill this vacancy in the STF. We have an election soon, and the STF issue will be the subject of these elections. Let’s leave it to the next president of the Republic to make that choice”, declared Moro, during Messias’ hearing session at the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CC).
“The population will be able to choose whether they want the continuity of this model, of a STF closely linked to President Lula, or whether they want a different model.”
Government leader counters
Senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) countered Moro and stated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has the authority to make the nomination. He compared the prerogative to the senators’ vote.
“I question, due to the end of the term, if any senator would give up the prerogative of voting for a candidate who is in the STF hearing, because the term is in the last year?”, he asked.
“The people delegated full powers to a president of the Republic for four years and no one has the right to raise suspicions about the authority of a president elected by popular will”, said the PT member.

Carvalho also criticized the possibility of Congress overturning the veto on the dosimetry project, which would reduce the sentences of those convicted of January 8th. According to the senator, if the dosimetry is approved, “anything will pass under this bridge”.
