Messiah was calm in defeat and allies hunt for culprits – 04/29/2026 – Brasília Hoje

The Union’s attorney general, , received the news of his appointment to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) on Wednesday night (29) with serenity. He received a long hug from his wife, Karina Messias. His tranquility, however, contrasted with the restlessness of his political allies, who soon tried to understand the anatomy of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Messias followed the vote in the government leadership booth in the Senate, in a private environment, with around 30 people nearby. After hugging the woman, the AGU was hugged and applauded by those present. He gave a short speech, acknowledging the defeat and stating that it was time to put “the ball forward”.

At his side were the nominee’s rapporteur, Senator , as well as other senators from President Lula’s base. The national president of PSB, João Campos, was also present. The mayor of Recife issued a party note in support of the nominee, in a way of cooling the Senate’s preference for the nomination of the senator, his supporter.

The Union’s attorney general stated that it was a “design” of God. Shortly afterwards, he went to a smaller room, where he spoke with President Lula by phone.

Meanwhile, allies were already complaining about betrayals and took the voting panel to collectively deduce who changed the vote at the last minute. They went block by block, trying to reach a consensus on who the turncoats would be.

Senators report that, last week, they had a floor of 36 colleagues declaring express and supposedly unchangeable support. This week, they say they got around 10 more votes in favor, counting undecided voters who seemed to be convinced.

He was defeated with 42 votes against his nomination and 34 in favor in the plenary. Voting is secret.

The assessment is that the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), acted behind the scenes to change votes. He was the main defender of Pacheco’s nomination and didn’t even welcome Messias to talk.

Still in the small room, some senators assessed that the government took a backlash on social media. Allies pointed out that the right took control of the agenda, attacking the AGU’s positions on abortion and related issues, something that also helped to create a climate against that chosen by Lula.
