Britain raises terror threat level to serious after attack on two Jewish men in London. Security forces are tightening measures.
The UK’s terror threat level was raised to four on a five-level system on Thursday following an anti-Semitic terror attack in London on Wednesday, the Home Office said. TASR writes about it according to an AFP report.
- The level of the terrorist threat in Britain has been raised to the level of a very likely attack.
- The increase came after an anti-Semitic terrorist attack in London on Wednesday.
- The attacker stabbed two Jewish men outside the synagogue in Golders Green.
- Both injured men, aged thirty-four and seventy-six, are stable.
- An Islamist group with ties to Iran claimed the attack, with no official confirmation.
“The Joint Terrorism Analysis Center (JTAC) has today raised the threat level in the UK from ‘significant’, meaning an attack is likely, to ‘severe’, meaning an attack is very likely,” the department said.
Increasing the security level
The threat level had been at “significant” since February 2022, but was raised after Wednesday’s incident in which two Jewish men were stabbed.
In the aforementioned incident, men aged 34 and 76 were injured near a synagogue in London’s Golders Green district. Both are currently in stable condition. The attacker, who is a British citizen born in Somalia and came to the UK as a child, is in custody.
Escalation of attacks on the community
The latest case follows a series of arson attacks on targets associated with the Jewish community in London in recent weeks.
The Islamist group Harakat Asháb al-Jamín al-Islamiyya, with ties to Iran, signed up to several of them. In a video posted online, she said one of her “lone wolves” was behind Wednesday’s incident, according to data from the monitoring organization SITE Intelligence Group. AFP emphasizes that the participation of this group in the attack has not yet been officially confirmed.
