Cid Gomes: there was a lack of republican spirit when nominating Messias – 04/30/2026 – Brasília Hoje

He says he knew he did not have more than 35 votes to be approved for the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and that there was a lack of republican spirit in President Lula’s (PT) choice.

Cid was one of the two senators who were absent this Wednesday (29). The senator is in Lisbon (Portugal). He says that the trip was already planned and that he had warned the Messiah himself that he would not vote in favor of him.

Cid states that the Senate “had already made several deferences to Lula”, including approving the two previous nominees: Cristiano Zanin, his lawyer in Operation Lava Jato, and Flávio Dino, his former Minister of Justice. Appointing a third party, in the senator’s view, was a “joke”.

“He nominated Zanin, who had been his lawyer. A competent, respected, very well-respected lawyer. Then he nominated a guy who is in politics, an ally of his historically. Okay, he was approved. Then it became a joke. I think there was a lack of republican spirit in the nomination. Nothing, I repeat, nothing against the boy there [Messias]”, said Cid.

The senator says that a combination of factors led to the historic rejection of Messias by 34 votes to 42, including the setting up of platforms in the states. One of the main ones, however, was the Senate’s frustration with Lula’s decision not to nominate the former president of the House (-MG).

Cid states that Pacheco, (-AP). He says that Pacheco played a decisive role in defending democracy and was not properly recognized by the PT member.

“I knew he [Messias] had less than 35 votes. I told him in November that my vote would mean nothing. I had a very clear feeling that the natural name was Rodrigo Pacheco. He was not Davi’s candidate, as people try to say. He was the country’s candidate, a suitable name for the Supreme Court”, says Cid.

“But it was a combination of factors. You can be sure that there are snakes, parakeets, lizards, everything in between. There are people who are dissatisfied because they are against the PT in one place, there are people who are dissatisfied because they were excluded by the PT on a ticket, in an alliance. There are all the feelings.”
