Balance released by the state Civil Defense and Recife City Hall counts 871 homeless
Heavy rains in Pernambuco this Friday (May 1, 2026) left at least 4 dead and 1,068 homeless. The numbers are from and Recife City Hall.
A 24-year-old woman and her son died in the Dois Unidos neighborhood, in the capital of Pernambuco. In Olinda, a 20-year-old woman and her 6-month-old baby died. They died in a burial, which also left 5 people injured.
In total, the Fire Department has already rescued 340 people in extreme risk situations across the state. Of the total of 23 shelters open to receive families, 11 are the responsibility of the Government of Pernambuco and 12 are administered by the Recife City Council. The data was provided by the vice-governor of Pernambuco, Priscila Krause, in her account on X.
Rescue teams and Civil Defense remain on alert due to climate instability in the region.
NUMBER OF HOMELESS
The Fire Department reported that 340 people were rescued in incidents directly linked to the volume of water. To serve the population, the state government and the capital’s municipal management together provided 23 temporary shelters.
The municipality of Goiana concentrates the largest number of people affected in the interior, with 146 homeless and 944 displaced people. In the capital, Recife city hall registered 449 residents who had to leave their homes and were sent to the municipal reception network.
Other cities in the Metropolitan Region and the interior also reported significant damage. In Timbaúba, there are 34 homeless and 52 homeless. Paulista registered 32 homeless people, followed by Igarassu (27), Limoeiro (9) and Camaragibe (4).
PARAÍBA ALSO SUFFERS FROM THE RAIN
In Paraíba, the advance of rain over the Northeast resulted in serious structural damage and isolation of communities. The most critical case was in Ingá, in the Agreste region of Paraíba.
The capital João Pessoa is facing rain that has lasted four days. With an accumulation of 125 millimeters in the last 24 hours, neighborhoods such as Altiplano, Grotão and Tambauzinho suffer from severe flooding.
