Inmet issues warning after rains in the Northeast leave at least 6 dead

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued an orange alert for intense rain in Northeastern states this Saturday (2). The region has been suffering from storms in recent days which left at least four dead in Pernambuco and two in Paraíba.

According to the agency, the forecast is for storms between 50 and 100mm on the day and intense winds between 60 and 100 km/h, with the risk of electricity cuts and flooding.

The Metropolitan region of Recife and the areas of Agreste and Mata in Pernambuco are within the alert radius. In Paraíba, the Mata Paraibana, Agreste Paraibano and Borborema regions should also suffer from the storms.

Inmet also listed areas in Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Maranhão and Piauí. The body recommends that, if possible, the population disconnect electrical appliances from the general power supply and that, in case of gusts of wind, do not take shelter under trees or park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs.

The institute’s alert is valid until 11:59 pm this Saturday. The South region is on red alert since Friday morning, the 1st. According to Inmet, there is a great danger of a storm this Saturday, with winds exceeding 100 km/h and rain with a volume above 60mm per hour.

As Affected areas range from the Metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS)passing through West Santa Catarina and Southwest Paraná (read more below).

Because of the rain, the State Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul issued an alert for a moderate risk of landslides in several regions of the State. In Porto Alegre, the alert is valid until Saturday night.

In the cities of Caxias do Sul, Muçum, Parobé and Três Coroas, the risk extends until the early hours of Sunday, 3.

Pernambuco

In Pernambuco, in . They were victims of two different landslides.

The first was in Alto da Bondade, in Olinda, which killed a 21-year-old woman and her six-month-old daughter. The second was in Dois Unidos, in the north of Recife, which killed another woman whose age was not disclosed and her six-year-old son.

Paraíba

In Paraíba, two men died in the city of Guarabira. According to city hall, Washington Gonçalves de Souza, 41, and Antônio Felipe da Silva Júnior, 36, were electrocuted while participating in a race.

The suspicion is that an electric wire came into contact with a puddle of water. According to the Civil Defense of the State of Paraíba, 11 families were left homeless because of the rain in João Pessoa. They were sent to a local school.

Due to the rain, roads were blocked. There are impassable sections on PB-032; PB-054 and BR-230, according to the State government.

The bridge that passes through the urban section of Ingá was partially ruptured after the overflow of the river that runs through the city.

Yesterday, the 1st, the governor of Paraíba, Lucas Ribeiro (PP), declared a state of public calamity after a large volume of rain hit several regions of the state. According to a survey by the Paraíba Executive Water Management Agency (Aesa), three municipalities recorded record rainfall.

The municipalities with the highest volume were Alhandra (191 mm), Mogeiro (117 mm), Pilar (170 mm) and São José dos Ramos (128 mm). The numbers surpass the highest rates of the last 30 years.

The cities of Ingá, Itabaiana, Mogeiro, Pilar and Salgado de São Félix have a more worrying situation, according to the government.

Rio Grande do Sul

Since Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning, the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul caused flooding, fallen trees, road blockages and left hundreds of people homeless. In total, 19 municipalities reported damage to the State Civil Defense.

The city of Rosário do Sul, on the Western Border, is one of the most affected. According to city hall, the municipality recorded 324 mm of rain in just seven hours. The volume of water left 225 houses flooded and a total of 512 people homeless.

For now, no one needed to be taken to the municipal gymnasiumwhich was prepared to receive homeless people.

In the Central Region and Western Border, other cities also recorded disruptions. In São Gabriel, 21 families had to leave their homes after an accumulation of 200 mm of rain. There was also flooding in Santa Maria, Caçapava do Sul, Uruguaiana, Alegrete and Encruzilhada do Sul. In Nova Palma and Júlio de Castilhos, hail was recorded.

In the capital, Porto Alegre, it rained 103 mm in 24 hours in the Guarujá neighborhood.

The rain also caused structural problems on the roads. The RS-348, between Faxinal do Soturno and Ivorá, in the central region, is completely blocked after the elevation of the Arroio Guarda-Mor damaged a temporary diversion. On the same highway, between Faxinal do Soturno and Dona Francisca, the asphalt has given way and traffic for light vehicles is stop and go.

The BR-290 was completely blocked at km 353, between Vila Nova do Sul and São Gabriel, due to the elevation of the Arroio Bossoroca. The section was released this morning.
