It only takes a few centimeters and the harvest can turn out completely differently. The depth of onion planting is a detail that many gardeners underestimate, while it is the one that decides how the plant will thrive.
Onions are among the basic crops that are missing in almost any garden. Nevertheless, the same mistakes are still repeated around its cultivation. One of them is precisely the depth at which to plant it. Someone includes it too much, others leave it almost on the surface. The result is poor growth or a smaller harvest than everyone expected.
Growing onions from seedlings is easy if you follow the correct planting depth, spacing and suitable habitat. Watch the following video to see the entire process step by step:
Why exactly 7 centimeters
The ideal depth is often around seven centimeters. However, this is no random number. This depth provides sufficient stability to the onion while allowing it to easily break through to the surface.
However, if the onion is planted too shallow, it can easily topple over and take root poorly. On the contrary, too deep planting slows down its growth and the plant has to expend more energy to reach the surface.
But the structure of the soil is also important. In lighter and sandy soil, you can plant a little deeper, in heavier soil, on the contrary, a little closer to the ground. In this case, adapting to the conditions is the key to the onion taking root well and growing without unnecessary obstacles.
The most common planting mistakes
Many gardeners plant onions too deep, thinking that this will protect them from environmental influences. In reality, however, it rather harms the plant. A slow start will also affect the resulting size of the onion.
Another mistake is irregular planting: onions need space to develop. The correct distance between the individual pieces will ensure enough nutrients and light for each plant.
Small detail, big harvest
Gardening is often about the little things that decide the outcome, and the depth to which you plant is one of them. However, if you pay enough attention to it, it will reward you not only with strong plants, but also with a really rich harvest. Just follow a simple rule, and even an ordinary onion can surprise you with its results.
