The fight for the life of the Nobel Prize winner: Narges Mohammadi is in critical condition

The imprisoned winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi, is fighting for her life in the hospital after she was hospitalized five days ago for acute heart problems, her supporters announced on Tuesday. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.

“We are not only fighting to free Narges, we are also fighting to keep her heart beating,” stated her lawyer from Paris, Chirinne Ardakaniová, at a press conference. According to her, Mohammadi is now “between life and death”. Jonathan Dagher of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which is part of its support committee, said that for the first time “there is a risk of death” laureates. “We must act before it is too late,” he added.

Mohammadi, who has spent most of her time behind bars for activism in the past two decades, was last detained by authorities in December 2025 after she criticized the Iranian regime at a lawyer’s funeral. The activist suffers from a heart disease, but at the same time, apparently, she overcame two heart attacks March 24 and May 1 in a prison in the north of Iran. After the last incident, she was transferred to the intensive care unit, where she is undergoing treatment under the constant supervision of prison guards, Ardakani said. The activist’s health is “unprecedentedly deteriorating… we have never been so afraid for Nargesa’s life, she could leave us at any moment.” declared her legal representative.

The Nobel laureate lost 20 kilograms in prison and has speech problems. Supporters want authorities to fly her to Tehran to be treated by her personal medical team. Mohammadi’s children and husband live in Paris, and Ardakani called on the French Foreign Ministry and President Emmanuel Macron to take tougher action in her case. “We expect the president of the republic to take a decisive position,” she said.
