Abbas Araghchi met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the Chinese capital this Wednesday (May 6)
The Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, met this Wednesday (May 6, 2026) with his Chinese counterpart, , in Beijing. The meeting takes place 1 day after the president of the United States, (Republican Party), announced the suspension of the military operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz and stated that a peace agreement between the USA and Iran has advanced.
At the meeting, Araghchi told Wang Yi that “the issue of opening the Strait of Hormuz can be resolved as soon as possible” and that the Iranian government’s understanding is that the solution to the crisis in the Middle East will not come through military means. China is one of the countries most interested in normalizing traffic in Hormuz, as it is the main destination for goods crossing the sea route.
Araghchi also said that the Iranian government “trust” in China and expects Chinese support in “establishment of a new post-war regional architecture”. One of the Iranians’ ideas for this new regional order is .
In this scenario, China would be the country most affected by the new tariff, but the Iranian government has made gestures that indicate that the country may be spared. At the end of March, Araghchi said, in an interview, that only 5 countries were authorized to cross the strait while Iran blocked the passage: China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan.
In turn, Wang Yi said that China is a reliable strategic partner for Iran. He stated that the country is willing to “consolidate and deepen mutual political trust with Iran”.
The war in the Middle East was the central topic of Araghchi’s trip to the Chinese capital, but the meeting took place against the backdrop of the 55th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic relations between China and Iran, completed in 2026.
FREEDOM PROJECT
The US operation in the Strait of Hormuz sought to rescue 23,000 sailors and vessels in the sea passage. In an interview with journalists, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that 10 sailors have already died and attributed responsibility for the situation to the Iranian regime.
The mission was canceled by Trump. According to the head of the White House, the suspension was requested by Pakistan, which acts as mediator, “and by other countries”. He didn’t mention which ones.
While Iran maintains control of the Strait of Hormuz, the US runs its own naval blockade against the Iranians. The White House estimate is that the Iranian regime has already sold oil since the blockade began on April 13.
