Basic research in Austria continues to be on the rise

Despite the economic difficulties and geopolitical crises, basic research in Austria has recently developed extremely positively: last year, the Austrian Science Fund FWF invested around 340 million euros in 749 new research projects at universities and non-university research institutions. In total, the FWF is currently supporting around 5,300 researchers – more than ever before. Due to increasing demand, especially in the junior sector, the pressure on the approval rate remains high, and excellent applications continue to have to be rejected, as FWF President Christof Gattringer emphasized at the presentation of the annual balance sheet for 2025 on Wednesday in Vienna.
