Ted Turner, founder of CNN, dies aged 87

The businessman and philanthropist Ted Turner, founder of CNN, died this Wednesday (6)at age 87, according to a statement from Turner Enterprises. So far, the cause of death has not been reported.

Born in Ohio and based in Atlanta, Turner built a media conglomerate that included the first cable TV superstation, as well as movie and animation channels and participation in sports teams such as the Atlanta Braves.

In addition to his role in communication, Turner also distinguished himself as a sailor, environmentalist and philanthropist. He founded the United Nations Foundation, advocated the global elimination of nuclear weapons, and became one of the largest landowners in the United States.

Em 1991, Turner was chosen “Man of the Year” by the magazine Time for its role in influencing events and transforming spectators in around 150 countries into immediate witnesses of history.

After sell its assets to Time Warnerstepped away from the administration, but continued to point to CNN as his main achievement.

In a statement, the president of CNN Worldwide, Mark Thompson, stated that Turner was a “fearless and visionary” leader, whose legacy continues to influence the broadcaster and global journalism.

In 2018, Turner revealed that he had been diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies. In early 2025, he was hospitalized with mild pneumonia and recovered. The businessman leaves five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
