This Wednesday, Real Atunara carried out the first bluefin tuna capture operation of 2026 off the Algarve coast, in Armação do Barril, in Tavira, thus starting the new annual campaign for this highly valued species in international markets.
The operation began at dawn and lasted for several hours, under the coordination of the captain of the vessel, Rui Ornelas, responsible for leading the team of fishermen involved in this centuries-old tradition in the Algarve.

The first specimen of the harvest, weighing more than 100 kilos, was caught in Armação do Barril and will go straight to the 8th “Almadrava” Tuna Festival, which takes place between the 8th and 10th of May at Vila Galé Albacora, in Tavira.
The fish will be presented under the Bluest brand, Real Atunara’s new premium banner dedicated to promoting bluefin tuna in excellent markets.
“This first operation marks the beginning of another campaign and the continuity of a tradition that is part of the region’s identity”, says Miguel Socorro, general director of the company.
Fishing tradition continues to live in the Algarve
Bluefin tuna is caught during the species’ migratory journey towards the Mediterranean, where it spawns, and is especially appreciated in international cuisine, particularly for sushi and sashimi.
According to Real Atunara, the almadrava is a fixed system of networks recognized for its selective nature and respect for the natural cycles of the species.

The company also highlights that this practice meets international conservation standards defined by ICCAT and the European Union.
The “Almadrava” Tuna Festival takes place in the former Arraial Ferreira Neto, currently transformed into the Vila Galé Albacora hotel.
