Passengers on Hantavirus-Stricken Ship Are High-Risk Contacts

All passengers on the cruise ship hit by a are considered high-risk contacts as a precautionary measureEurope’s public health agency said, ahead of the forecast, near the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Asymptomatic passengers will be repatriated for self-quarantine via specially organized transportand not by regular commercial flights, by their respective countries, reported this Saturday (9), the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, as part of its rapid scientific opinion.

Countries were preparing to evacuate their citizens from the MV Hondius ship at around 3:30 am to 4:00 am (Brasília time). At least, including three who died – a Dutch couple and a German citizen –, informed the World Health Organization (WHO) last Friday (8). Six of the eight cases were confirmed as infected with the virus, and two others are suspected cases, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

Although passengers are considered high risk upon disembarkation, not all will necessarily be considered high risk upon returning to their home countries, the ECDC (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control) said.
