50-meter-high panoramic elevator reopens in this Portuguese city and access is free

Elevator that connects the top to the base of a cliff next to the Tagus will close with no reopening date: this is the last day to visit it

The Boca do Vento panoramic elevator, in Almada, is back in operation after two months closed for renovation work. The infrastructure, which connects the historic center of the city to the waterfront, continues to be one of the quickest and most popular ways to get to Jardim do Rio without using a car.

According to the news agency, the reopening was announced by the Almada City Council, which highlights the recovery of this access as a way of bringing residents and visitors closer to one of the best-known areas on the south bank.

At around 50 meters high, the panoramic elevator has become, over the years, a common point of passage for those visiting Almada, especially for the open view over the Tagus River and the city of Lisbon. In addition to the functional component, the route is also used by those looking for a walk along the riverfront or wanting to access the various food outlets located in that area of the city.

The equipment was closed for around two months for renovation work. The intervention made it possible to recover and improve access between the historic center and the lower part of the city. The city council considers that the reopening represents not only the return of an important means of transport for local mobility, but also the appreciation of a space associated with heritage and leisure.

Important link for residents

The elevator doesn’t just serve tourists and occasional visitors. The news agency writes that the infrastructure is also used by the inhabitants of the Olho de Boi neighborhood, located on the riverfront of Almada. This small residential area, historically linked to the Companhia Portuguesa de Pescas, maintains a direct connection to the elevator to access the city’s urban center more easily.

Those who frequent the area are well aware of the importance of this vertical access, mainly to avoid the more demanding route between the riverside area and the upper part of Almada. According to the same source, the elevator also facilitates the circulation of customers at restaurants located close to the river, especially in the busiest tourist months and during weekends.

Between heritage and leisure

Boca do Vento continues to be one of the most popular areas for those visiting Almada, combining green spaces, viewpoints and pedestrian paths with views of the Tagus. Almada City Council emphasizes that this route allows you to “rediscover the city from a new angle”, in reference to the panoramic landscape that can be seen during the ascent and descent of the elevator.

One of the features that maintains interest in this equipment is the fact that access remains free, something that helps increase demand from both residents and tourists. He cites the same source that the elevator works as a practical connection between different points in the city, allowing distances to be shortened at no cost to users.

Over the last few years, the Boca do Vento panoramic elevator has become one of the most recognized elements in that area of Almada, especially among those looking for routes with views of Lisbon. With the reopening complete, residents and visitors can now once again use this access to travel between the historic center and the waterfront, at a time when the city is once again beginning to receive more tourist traffic.
