PL wants to maintain the presidency, while PSD works to inflate its bench and get the seat
The pre-candidacy of the president of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp), André do Prado (PL), to the Federal Senate, got busy behind the scenes again.
Re-elected president of the House, he was already prevented from contesting the election again, but the confirmation of his name as a candidate in 2026 reignited the succession debate in São Paulo. Furthermore, Alesp itself gained more spotlight.
André’s PL wants to remain in the presidency. To this end, among the most cited names within the acronym are those of state deputies Alex Madureira, current party leader in Alesp, Oseias de Madureira and Thiago Auricchio.
The São Paulo PL hopes to maintain the largest bench in the House after the 2026 election. They began the current term with 19 parliamentarians. Today, there are 22 – and they estimate that they could reach 23. Meanwhile, the PT, which has the second largest group, expects something between 18 and 25 – today, it has 17.
In addition to the two subtitles, the PSD has entered the game with force. Gilberto Kassab’s party estimates it will gain more than 20 deputies and take the PL post.
The PSDB swelled in the House before the end of the party window, when – and form a bench of now 11 deputies.
The party wants to rival the PL using the argument, to win the presidency, that the PL was already included in Tarcísio’s majority ticket for the elections, and.
In Alesp, it is common for the party with the largest number of parliamentarians to win the presidency, while the second largest holds the main chair at the board of directors. In recent years, this agreement has always been reached between the government and the opposition, the PT – which votes in favor of the current administration’s candidate.
