PL files Amnesty PEC after Moraes decision

Proposal reacts to the suspension of the Dosimetry Law and seeks to annul the sentences of those convicted of January 8th, including Jair Bolsonaro

The leader of the PL in the Chamber, federal deputy (RJ), filed a PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) of Amnesty for those involved in the acts of the 8th of January, following a decision by the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) which suspended the application of the . According to the author of the proposal, the judge’s measure reinforces the need for a response from Congress to guarantee, according to him, “justice, balance and proportionality” in the penalties applied to those convicted of .

The text proposes amnesty for “alleged crimes of armed criminal association, attempt or abolition of the democratic rule of law and coup d’état”.

In Sosthenes’ view, “this is mere political persecution for rebelling against the Judiciary which aims to intimidate and condemn politicians who oppose the authoritarian left-wing government that presides over the country”.

The deputy stated that the initiative will be carried out “within the Constitution and through Parliament” and aims to restore rights and provide legal security to those involved. According to him, the suspension of the law shows that specific adjustments would not be enough to address the issue.

The proposal is also presented as a reaction to what the deputy classified as an increase in . For him, Congress cannot “watch passively” to measures that, in his assessment, disregard the role of the Legislature.

The text of the PEC, according to the author, seeks to address the problem “at the root” and promote what he calls “national pacification”. Sóstenes states that the proposal aims to correct distortions in the punishments applied and guarantee a more proportional treatment of cases related to the acts of January 8th.

The articulation now focuses on collecting the minimum of 171 signatures to file the proposal in the Chamber. The intention is to speed up the processing of the PEC in Congress.
