With six weeks to go until the end of the school year, teachers and families are facing a . An unprecedented protest due to its size that is fueled by an also unprecedented discomfort among teachers, mainly due to the , something that is also hindering educational results, as many of them admit. The Government has made a move until this weekend, calling the unions to a sectoral table on Thursday, but it remains to be seen if Education opens up to listen to the unions and thus slows down the intense calendar. For now, if nothing changes,:
What sectors are affected?
Teachers from public and subsidized schools (from 0 to 18 years old), labor personnel and all types of workers from educational centers are invited, from early childhood educators, educators or social integrators, special education, administrative staff, maintenance or cleaning personnel and dining room monitors.
When does my school go on strike?
Within this month of strike, three strikes are planned that will affect all of Catalonia; They will be on May 12 and 27, and June 5, which coincide with the start and closure of the new wave of protests.
The rest of the days are strikes by territory, distributed so that each area will be affected by two strikes. They are the following:
Barcelona Zone: May 18 and June 2
Baix Llobregat and Penedès area: May 13 and 29
Vallès and Maresme area: 19 and 28 May
Girona and central Catalonia zone: May 14 and June 1
Lleida and Aran Zone: May 15 and June 4
Tarragona and Ebre Zone: May 21 and June 3
What are the minimum services?
One person from the management team in each center, one teacher for every three classrooms (from preschool to ESO), 50% in special education centers, 33% in daycare centers and 50% in dining rooms and after-school hours.
Why so many days of strike?
The unrest of the teachers already broke out in February, and to avoid a new massive strike in March, to invest 2,000 million in five years, which takes the form of a 30% increase in the salary supplement (800 euros more per year), eliminating excess ratios in the institutes, 500 new staffing or the reduction of bureaucracy, among others.
and the spirits of the group flared even more. Faced with the castling of the Government, which until now has refused to reopen negotiations, the majority unions decided to redouble their pressure on Education, calling for five weeks with almost daily strikes – avoiding festive days and long weekends such as the Second Easter.
What do teachers demand?
The majority unions consider it “insufficient” and “not very concrete”, and demand a greater salary increase to recover the purchasing power lost in recent years, an effective reduction in ratios or more staff increases. This is precisely the main request of teachers who work in classrooms, who are overwhelmed by such a diversity of students.
What does the Government say?
The Government has so far been closed in defending the pact signed with CC OO, although it claims to maintain its willingness to speak with the unions. “Hand extended to implement the agreement we have reached and implement it jointly” with all the unions, Salvador Illa assured this Monday. For her part, the Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, clarified that “to share ways to redirect the situation.”
These days before the strike, the Government tries to respond by explaining its educational improvement actions undertaken in recent years. Last week, the Executive Council approved the incorporation of 509 professionals linked to the inclusive school for the next academic year. And this Monday, in an event at the Palau de la Generalitat, the agreement was signed to transfer 100 million to the municipalities to make improvements in schools, a measure that the Government has presented three times in just two months.
