Bay leaf as a fearless knight

Most gardeners will surely be pleased that there is a gentle and affordable way to healthy and fruit-filled cucumbers, which was already known to our ancestors and which is coming back into fashion today in the form of using an ordinary bay leaf. This aromatic spice, which we normally have in the kitchen, hides strong antiseptic and fungicidal properties that can protect the delicate cucumber seedlings from problematic microorganisms before they can cause damage.

Heals and strengthens immunity

The use of bay leaves in the garden is no surprise to more experienced gardeners, and it is no longer quackery at all. We find pure biology in practice, as it contains essential oils and substances such as cineol, which naturally repel pests and prevent the development of fungal spores. While regular soil may harbor disease germs from previous years, bay leaf fertilizer and spray work perfectly as a treatment as well as prevention when, among other things, plants directly from the roots. The preparation of this miraculous elixir is child’s play. A few leaves boiled in water are enough to create a concentrated infusion full of B vitamins, potassium and magnesium, i.e. elements that cucumbers absolutely need for the formation of strong stems and juicy fruits. Perfect combination with soda

If we want to get the most out of this trick, we can combine the bay leaf with another commonly available ingredient – baking soda. The combination of bay leaf extract and soda will create an alkaline environment that is completely unacceptable for most mold and fungal diseases, while remaining absolutely safe for the plant itself. The solution prepared in this way can be used either as a dressing directly to the roots, or as a fine spray on the leaves, which is especially effective in the period when hot days alternate with rainy showers.

There is no need to worry

An interesting and very effective way of application is also burying crushed bay leaves directly in the ground during planting or during planting. Dry leaves gradually decompose in the soil and release their active substances in small doses over a longer period of time, which acts as a preventive protection against soil pests that could damage the fragile root system. This procedure is ideal for those who prefer “lazy” gardening, as one action at the beginning of the season can significantly improve the condition of the plants for several weeks. Anyone who might be worried about the change in the taste of cucumbers can remain absolutely calm. No aftertaste will stick in the fruits – on the other hand, bay leaf is a frequent companion of cucumbers, for example in sweet and sour pickles, so it will definitely not harm them.
