Government celebrates the end of the blouse tax online

A measure created by Planalto itself led the country to raise R$5 billion in 2025 with international orders

The federal government celebrated on social media, on Tuesday (May 12, 2026), the . Soon after the president (PT) signed the bill eliminating the 20% import tax on international purchases of up to US$50, Planalto celebrated in an electoral tone.

“The tax on blouses is GONE! International purchases up to 50 dollars are no longer taxed by the Brazilian government. The import tax is over. The Brazilian government is on the side of the Brazilian people”says on Instagram.

Created by the government itself, the blouse fee began to be charged in August 2024, after . It produced a record revenue of R$5 billion in 2025, according to the Federal Revenue Service. In the first 4 months of 2026, the government raised R$1.7 billion from international orders.

The charge caused political strain for the government, especially on social media, as it impacted purchases on international platforms such as Shein, Shopee and AliExpress.

Even with the end of the federal tax, the state ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) will continue to be charged on imports. The government argues that the decision was possible after expanding regulation of the sector and combating smuggling in recent years.

Lula’s publication is accompanied by a video in which the Secretary of the National Treasury, Rogério Ceron, talks about the end of the tax. “Smuggling, which was a hallmark of this sector, was eliminated”these.

On X, the government published a video in which the Minister of Planning and Budget, , praises Lula’s decision. “What you are doing is removing federal taxes from popular consumption, from the consumption of the poorest people. So, you are improving the profile of our taxation. (…) Congratulations to you for this measure”declared Moretti.
