Historian Anne Applebaum: Europe must defend itself


Since 1945, generations of Europeans have worked to ensure that the catastrophe of the Second World War is not repeated. In rebuilding, they also built something unprecedented: a set of institutions to promote liberal democracy, the rule of law, intergovernmental cooperation and economic integration. These institutions were intended to both contribute to increasing prosperity and prevent the recurrence of imperial rivalries, protectionism and genocidal ambitions.
