During the ongoing summit in Beijing, the US and Chinese delegations raised the key issue of artificial intelligence security. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the goal is to create protocols that prevent the abuse of the most powerful models by terrorist groups or criminal entities.
The delegations of the United States and China are also discussing the possible creation of security restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) during the ongoing summit of presidents in Beijing. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this on Thursday on the sidelines of President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to China. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
- The delegations of the United States and China are negotiating in Beijing on the safety of artificial intelligence.
- Scott Bessent emphasizes the need to maintain America’s lead over China in artificial intelligence.
- Washington and Beijing want to create a protocol of best practices against the abuse of powerful AI models.
- Donald Trump’s visit to China is accompanied by technology leaders Elon Musk and Jensen Huang.
- The Claude Mythos model revealed critical vulnerabilities in the systems and raised concerns about possible misuse by terrorists.
Bessent: We don’t want to hinder innovation
In a pre-recorded interview with CNBC, Bessent said it is extremely important for the US to maintain its lead over China in AI. Allegedly, this is precisely why China is interested in discussing security mechanisms. Although Beijing is far behind, according to Bessent, it has a very advanced AI industry.
“We do not want to hinder innovation. Our task is therefore to find an optimal compromise that will bring us as much innovation as possible and at the same time the highest level of security,” the minister said, adding that the goal is also to create a protocol of best practices that will prevent abuse of the most powerful models of artificial intelligence by non-state entities.
Negotiations in China
Trump began his official visit to China on Thursday. He called the local president Xi Jinping a friend during the negotiations and invited him to visit the White House in September.
According to AFP, a number of unresolved trade disputes remain between the US and China, including over US export restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence technologies going to China in an attempt to limit its development in the field.
The US president is accompanied in Beijing by several leading entrepreneurs in the technology industry, including the head of Tesla and xAI Elon Musk or the CEO of Nvidia Jensen Huang.
Concerns about the AI model
The talks to create restrictions on the use of AI come after Anthropic’s new powerful AI model Claude Mythos revealed serious security flaws in various systems. This has forced banks and other companies to patch and update software to remove vulnerabilities in their networks.
US government officials, according to Reuters, expressed concern that criminal or terrorist organizations could misuse the Mythos tool for attacks against financial markets or the global financial system.
