April 2026 brought the drought of the century: Some regions at a critical point, SHMÚ warns!

This year’s April ended as normal in most of Slovakia. In the northeastern part of Slovakia as cold. In terms of precipitation, it was evaluated as extremely dry in all river basins of Slovakia. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported on this on its website.

“In terms of average monthly flows based on operational data, this month was evaluated as a dry month in most river basins of Slovakia, with the exception of the Danube basin, where it was evaluated as significantly below normal, and the Bodrog basin, where it was evaluated as extremely dry,” meteorologists stated. They added that overall this year’s April 2026 was significantly drier than last year, with the exception of the Small Carpathian region.

At the same time, according to them, there was no widespread precipitation during April, and the stability of the water levels in the watercourses remained. Meteorologists observed an increased water level only in the sub-catchment of the Little Danube in the area of ​​the Little Carpathians on the Blatina stream at the beginning of the month.

Similar to the previous month of March, in April 2026, a decrease in groundwater levels and the yield of springs was observed in most of Slovakia. In terms of average monthly values, April was evaluated as above average in the Dunajec and Poprad and Morava basins, on the contrary, as below average in the Bodva, Hrona, Ipľa, Slanaj and Váh basins. In the Hornád basin, the month was rated as average to slightly above average. According to SHMÚ, the most critical situation was recorded in the Bodrog basin, where a drought was observed.
