In a letter, Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced his resignation, making it clear that he no longer has any confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Streeting is seen by many analysts as the orchestrator of the intra-party and intra-government coup attempt against Keir Starmer that has been underway in recent days, following Labour’s significant losses in local elections.
His resignation is seen as the necessary and last-ditch move to launch a race for the party’s presidency and government, as without it there was no formal challenge to Starmer’s leadership. The prime minister, of course, as the hours went by today and everyone was waiting to see if Streeting would finally resign, he reiterated that he will fight against any attempt to question his leadership.
The prime minister’s spokesman said “his position has not changed since he made it clear on Monday”. The spokesman was also asked if the prime minister considered Wes Streeting’s tenure at the health department to be a success, with him replying that Streeting has had a “very positive impact on people’s lives”.
