The dialogues between Flávio Bolsonaro and banker Daniel Vorcaro, revealed by the website Intercept Brasil, threw the senator’s campaign into a crisis that could be fatal.
Publicly no one admits it, but behind the scenes many of the senator’s allies have doubts that he will be able to stay in the presidential race.
Michelle Bolsonaro’s name began to be mentioned as a possible replacement. Some even think that the PL should not have a candidate and support Romeu Zema or Ronaldo Caiado.
For now, Flávio remains in the game, but the repercussion of the messages is disastrous, and for several reasons.
First, the phase of Flávio swimming by arm and foot, just exploiting Lula’s mistakes, was over, which was what had been happening up until now. These revelations come at a time when the president is beginning to get out of line, with a series of positive news. He had a good meeting with Trump, announced the new Desenrola and the end of the blouse tax, for example.
Worse for Flavio, it has become more difficult now for him to use the corruption card against Lula. Every time he mentions the word Master, the memory of the very friendly dialogue with Vorcaro will immediately arise.
Accusing Lula of having received the banker at an audience at the Planalto Palace seems small in comparison. The president never called Vorcaro his brother, nor did he say “I will always be with you”, as Flávio did.
The senator was also caught when he said he never had contact with Vorcaro, which further undermines his credibility.
Finally, we have the request itself, which would reach an incredible R$134 million for a film in honor of his father.
A candidate for president who promises austerity and cutting superfluous spending, but asks for this astronomical sum from a banker involved in corruption is a big deal for his opponents.
If Flávio’s candidacy really survives, he will be hurt from this episode. The government gained many reasons to promote the Bolsomaster slogan, and at the very least neutralize an important flag of the senator, which is the fight against corruption.
The election is still a long way off, the real campaign hasn’t even started yet, and a lot will still happen. Who knows what else lies ahead based on Vorcaro’s dreaded cell phone? But life for the opposition has just gotten much more difficult.
