Analysis: Trump seeks to decipher a China that sees itself as a power of the future

Em meeting with Donald Trump this Thursday (14) in Beijing, the president of China, Xi Jinpingwarned the United States to adopt “caution” so as not to lead Sino-American relations to a “dangerous place”.

The “dangerous place” cited by China’s president is Taiwan: Beijing rejects any independence of the island (whether in fact or de jure) and increasingly emphasizes that he will not give up on reintegrating it into Chinese territory, even if to do so he has to use military strength.

The e is on the route to Japan and South Korea. The island targeted by Beijing is also responsible for manufacturing generative artificial intelligence generators and military software.

On the American side, he told Xi he wants the Chinese market – especially soybeans and beef – and the oil that flows from US shale reserves.

Today, more than 70% of the soybeans imported by China come from Brazil. In relation to beef, . And 40% of the oil that reaches the Chinese economy — today with its flow blocked by the war between Iran and the United States.

The signs of the first meeting between Trump and Xi on the American president’s two-day trip to Beijing were the subject of analysis in the WW this Thursday (14).

See the highlights of the block and watch the full analysis:

Marcus Vinícius de Freitas, professor at the University of Foreign Affairs of China: Food security is an essential element in ensuring China’s stability. And there is a history: the United States has already denied exporting grain to the Soviet Union. So, the Chinese food and table always have to be plentiful – and the food, cheap. In this sense, the Chinese seek to diversify their partners, and Brazil has fallen in love with this story, as it has high agricultural productivity, is a country that is open to investment and the purchase of Chinese products and is not an effective competitor to China in the geopolitical scenario.

Thiago de Aragão, CEO of Arko Advice Internacional: The Americans are always waiting for a Chinese position and convey the message to Taiwan that: “as long as you don’t unilaterally declare independence, we will” – in theory – “be here”. But it is clear that Taiwan’s trust in the United States has fallen a lot in recent years, and not only because of Trump, but since the first Russian invasion, in Crimea, when Ukraine imagined that the United States would also act in a more incisive way.

Lourival Sant’Anna, CNN International analyst: What Xi is saying to Trump is: “We are Athens and you are Sparta. So we can choose whether you accept that I am a culturally superior emerging power, and you are going to have to do without 90% of the most sophisticated chips in the world, because I am destined to have Taiwan – whether for better or for worse. If you want to fight, we will have a Peloponnesian War – and I will win. I would rather go for the good – but if you want to fight, I am ready, too.”
