Mercadona marks International Celiac Day, celebrated on May 16, reinforcing the commitment made to the celiac community in Portugal and Spain.
The company recalls that it has maintained this commitment for 26 years, since 2000 in Spain and since its arrival on the Portuguese market in 2019.

According to the supermarket chain, the objective is to guarantee “a broad, accessible and easy-to-identify offer” for customers with intolerance or allergies to gluten.
Mercadona currently offers more than 650 products recommended for celiac patients in its stores.
More than 650 gluten-free products available
The offer includes products from various categories, including bread, pasta, biscuits, frozen foods, desserts and fresh products.
According to the company, the intention is for celiac patients to have access to “the same type of products and in the same sections as other consumers”.

Mercadona works with more than 250 specialized suppliers in Portugal and Spain to guarantee quality, food safety and nutritional balance.
The company also maintains close collaboration with entities such as (APC).
Workshops and awareness-raising actions marked 2025
Throughout this year, Mercadona developed 17 actions in Portugal linked to raising awareness about celiac disease.
Among the initiatives were gluten-free recipe workshops, co-innovation sessions, training actions and participation in conferences organized by associations.

The company also created and launched informative content to help consumers and families better understand the disease.
In partnership with APC, the children’s story “The Bando dos Celiacs” was also developed, made available free of charge.
Company reinforces information about celiac disease
Mercadona also took advantage of the date to clarify frequently asked questions related to celiac disease and gluten-free eating.

According to information released, celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune pathology triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically susceptible people.
The company reminds us that eliminating gluten from the diet is essential to avoid symptoms and allow intestinal recovery.
The network also highlights the importance of reading labels and correctly identifying allergens in food products.
