Lisbon will have the largest electoral college outside Brazil

Voting will take place in 3 buildings at Universidade Paulista, with 183 sections and 87 ballot boxes

Lisbon is the largest Brazilian electoral college abroad for , with 68,979 voters eligible to vote. The number represents growth of 52.4% compared to 2022, when the capital of São Paulo had 45,273 registered Brazilians.

The deadline to regularize the electoral registration, transfer the residence or register ended on May 6th. In election years, the Electoral Court closes registration 151 days before the vote.

According to Itamaraty, the ZZ (Exterior Electoral Zone) surpassed the mark of 1 million registered voters. Of this total, 862,562 are eligible to vote.

The concentration is greatest in Europe, North America and Japan. In 2022, there were around 697 thousand eligible voters abroad. At the time, the number already represented an increase of 39.2% compared to 2018.

The growth of the electorate in Lisbon increases pressure on the voting structure in Portugal. In 2022, only in the Portuguese capital. when trying to vote for the 2nd time instead of someone else.

There were also queues of at least 3 hours in Porto, which in 2026 appears in 5th position among the largest Brazilian electoral colleges abroad. Portugal also has a 3rd city with a voting location: Faro, in the south of the country.

According to the consulate in Lisbon confirmed to the Poder360the voting structure in the Portuguese capital will be distributed this year across 3 spaces at the University of Lisbon: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts and the Rectory building.

The consulate reported that the initial forecast is to install 183 polling stations and 87 electronic voting machines, but the final numbers will be confirmed in June.

Itamaraty cited the largest communities of eligible voters abroad. The agency did not present, in the publication, updated numbers for each city. Here are the first 5:

  • Boston;
  • Nagoya;
  • Miami;
  • Porto;
  • London;
  • Nova York;
  • Tokyo;
  • Paris;
  • Milan.

Brazilians who have their electoral domicile abroad only vote in the elections for president and vice-president of the Republic. The organization of voting outside Brazil is carried out by the TRE-DF (Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District), with the support of consulates and diplomatic missions.
