Court closes Orelha case at the request of the Public Ministry

Decision came after analyzing 2 thousand files; animal was euthanized

The Children and Youth Court of Florianópolis took up the case regarding the death of the dog, in Praia Brava, at the request of the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina. The State Court of Justice confirmed the information this Friday (May 15, 2026).

“It is important to clarify that when the Public Prosecutor’s Office requests the archiving of a criminal proceeding within legal parameters, the Judiciary cannot continue the process on its own initiative”explained the TJ-SC, in a note.

On May 12, the MP-SC reported that, after analyzing 2,000 files, videos and technical reports, it concluded that the dog was not killed as a result of aggression by a group of teenagers. The agency asked the court to close the case. The process takes place in secret from the courts.

According to the analysis carried out by the prosecution, the teenagers and Orelha “they were not together on the beach during the period of the alleged aggression”. The organization states that the death of Orelha, who was subjected to euthanasia, occurred due to a “serious and pre-existing condition, and not aggression”.
