The former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, used social media, this Friday (15), to defend himself after being the target of Operation Without Refining, by the PF (Federal Police), which is investigating a scheme of tax evasion, asset concealment and evasion of resources abroad involving the Refit refinery.
In the video, Castro stated that he had access to the decision of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), which said that “there is something very strange” in the case. The former governor added that Rio de Janeiro was the only state to be able to collect debts from Refit and said he was “absolutely convinced of the fairness” of all the acts carried out during his administration.
“Regarding the company targeted by the operation, everyone knows that it is one of the largest debtors in the country and has liabilities with practically all states and the Union. But guess what, which is the only state that managed to collect taxes owed by this company? The State of Rio de Janeiro. And this was only possible thanks to a great effort on our part to collect this debt. We managed to secure an agreement that has already returned more than R$1 billion to the public coffers”, stated Castro.
denied that he had sanctioned a complementary law in 2025 to benefit the company. According to Castro, the rule was based on a recommendation from the National Council for Financial Policy (Confaz), and stated that Refit already had a payment agreement with the state before the creation of the measure mentioned in the investigation.
The investigation also mentions that Castro had a meeting with the owner of Refit, Ricardo Magro, at an event in the United States. The former governor said he was part of an event promoted by Veja magazine, which was attended by authorities, including retired STF (Supreme Federal Court) minister Luís Roberto Barroso.
“In election years, unfortunately, this method is always used. This is sad, very sad. Even so, I continue to believe in the justice of my country today and always”, concluded the former governor.
