The Algarve coastline continues to receive interventions linked to pedestrian mobility and the enhancement of bathing areas, at a time when several beaches in the region are preparing for the high season. Between walkways, improved access and protected areas, there is a connection that is now progressing between two areas very popular with Portuguese people and tourists.
In the Eastern Algarve, construction is underway on a new walkway that will connect Altura to Praia Verde. According to the official page of Filomena Sintra, president of Castro Marim City Council, the work should be completed in July and is being carried out by the beach support concessionaires awarded in that area.
Connection that was already planned
The same publication states that one of the bathing facilities has already been built by the Verdelago project, while the second is expected to go ahead between 2026 and 2027, according to the conditions established in the public tender related to the concession of the area.
The new structure aims to facilitate pedestrian circulation between Altura and Praia Verde, on a coastal strip marked by preserved dunes and a protected natural environment. The intervention comes in an area integrated into the Ria Formosa/Castro Marim Natura 2000 Network, known for its biodiversity and landscapes on the eastern coast.
Wide view over the Algarve coast
According to the Castro Marim municipality portal, Praia Verde differs because it is located in an area of higher relief, allowing a broad view of the coast. According to the same source, the landscape extends from Monte Gordo bay to the Manta Rota area.
The beachfront is approximately 550 meters long and is surrounded by a dune system considered to be well preserved. The municipality writes that in this area there are typical plant species, such as the estorno, the sandy perpetual and the sandy narcissus, as well as emblematic species of the local fauna, such as the chameleon.
Beach accessible since 2008
Praia Verde has had Accessible Beach status since 2008. The site currently has two walkways, adapted parking lots and sanitary facilities prepared for citizens with reduced mobility. One of the bathing units also has an amphibious chair to support access to the sea. The beach is monitored during the bathing season by lifeguards at the two existing supports.
Bathing is another element highlighted by the municipality. The same source mentions that Praia Verde has excellent quality water and mild temperatures, characteristics that help keep demand high in the summer months. Access to the sand is currently via two parking lots and two main entrances that end up converging along the beach. With the new boardwalk, circulation between Altura and this coastal area could become simpler for residents and visitors.
Works started before summer
Completion scheduled for July coincides with the period of greatest tourist influx in the Algarve. According to Filomena Sintra, work is already underway within the scope of the obligations assumed by the beach support concessionaires allocated for that coastal area.
The project comes at a time when several Algarve city halls have invested in the creation and restoration of walkways along the sea, both to facilitate access to beaches and to protect dune ecosystems from excessive circulation outside the defined trails.
Between nature and tourism
The Praia Verde area is often sought after by those who prefer beaches surrounded by vegetation and walking routes along the coast. Environmental preservation continues to be a priority in that coastal strip located in a protected area. At the same time, the new connection could reinforce mobility between different beaches in the municipality, in an area that, during the summer, receives thousands of visitors from various parts of the country and also from abroad.
Although the work is taking place without major national media, the future connection between Altura and Praia Verde should change the way many visitors travel through this part of the eastern Algarve in the coming months. Scheduled for completion in July, the new promenade promises to combine accessibility, environmental protection and a continuous route along the seafront in one of the most popular coastal areas of Castro Marim.
