MADRID, 17 – Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski highlighted the increasing reach of Ukrainian weapons in reference to the attack this Sunday (17) against the Moscow region, which resulted in the death of three people, the most powerful Ukrainian attack to date against the Russian capital region.
“Our forces carried out a large-scale operation against the Moscow region. A good wave of long-range attacks. Ukraine has this capability. There were more than 500 kilometers to the targets,” Zelensky said in his daily afternoon address.
Furthermore, he considers that “this is also important because the Moscow region is the most saturated with anti-aircraft defenses”. “They mainly protect the area surrounding the seat of power, but long-range Ukrainian attacks are overcoming these defenses,” he highlighted.
Zelensky stressed that the scope of the weaponry “is significantly changing the situation and, more generally, the perception of Russia’s war.”
The Ukrainian president highlighted that this attack is “a clear signal” so that “no one enters into conflict with Ukraine”. “It is important that this signal is sent precisely today, Memorial Day for the hundreds of thousands of victims of totalitarian repression, a repression that came precisely from Moscow”, he stated, referring to “Soviet terror”.
Regarding the military situation, Zelensky highlighted that, in the last 24 hours, there have been more Ukrainian operations than Russian ones, as a sign of “a change in the balance”.

On the diplomatic level, Zelenski highlighted that, over the next week, they will have “a significant number of contacts with Europeans in various formats, including at the level of leaders”, and that they are also preparing communication with the United States. “We work with them practically every day and we need relevant political results,” he said.
“Every day there must be results for Ukraine. Every day our strength and our long-range capabilities must increase”, reinforced Zelensky before ending his speech with his traditional “Glory to Ukraine!”.
Russian authorities confirmed impacts on infrastructure and homes in the Moscow region. Specifically, debris fell on the Moscow Oil Refinery, where twelve people were injured, although the plant continues to operate.
Debris also fell at Sheremetyevo Airport, although at a safe distance from aircraft and passenger areas. The airport itself and Moscow’s three other airports, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky, enforced flight restrictions during the attack, and 51 aircraft were diverted to other airports.
