According to a new report by the human rights organization Amnesty International, 2,707 people were executed in 17 countries worldwide in 2025. This is the highest level since 1981 and an almost 80 percent higher number than in 2024, when, according to Amnesty, at least 1,518 death sentences were carried out. According to the NGO, Iran is responsible for a large part of the increase last year: at least 2,159 people were executed there – more than twice as many as in 2024.
