The president of and CNJ (National Council of Justice), minister, stated this Monday (18) that the delegitimization of institutions paves the way for “instability and arbitrariness”. The statement was made during the inauguration of new CNJ advisors.
The speech takes place amid an image and credibility crisis faced by the Supreme Court. Without mentioning names, Fachin stated that “criticizing is legitimate”but that the attempt to “delegitimize” institutions weakens democracy.
“Freedom of political expression is a constitutional value that must always be preserved. Alongside, the Constitution also protects the institutional conditions without which democracy itself cannot function. This includes the integrity of public debate against coordinated campaigns of funded disinformation,” he said.
Earlier, STF minister Flávio Dino. According to Dino, the woman expressed a desire to kill him after seeing the magistrate’s name on a boarding pass. Fachin took advantage of the speech to express solidarity with his colleague.
The president of the STF also criticized the financing of disinformation for electoral purposes. “Systematically financing, and for electoral purposes, false information weakens institutions, the Powers of the Republic and the social fabric”he stated.
The speech took place during the inauguration ceremony of five new members of the CNJ. The minister of TST (Superior Labor Court) Kátia Magalhães Arruda, the judge of the TRT-7 (Regional Labor Court of the 7th Region) Paulo Regis Machado Botelho and the judge of the TRF-2 (Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region) Andréa Cunha Esmeraldo.
The judge of the TRT-10 (Regional Labor Court of the 10th Region) Noemia Aparecida Garcia Porto and the federal judge of TRF-1 (Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region) Ilan Presser.
The CNJ plenary is made up of 15 advisors, including representatives from the judiciary, the Public Ministry, the legal profession and citizens appointed by the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate.
