They are worth 'gold': 33 units of this grape-sized fruit were produced in Portugal and cost €820

The new Fundão cherry campaign has already started and has brought with it contradictory signals for the region. If, on the one hand, the start of the season was marked by a festive atmosphere and a solidarity auction that once again attracted attention, on the other hand, producers face significant losses due to the weather conditions recorded in recent weeks.

According to the portal, the official harvest began on May 18th and was accompanied by the eighth edition of the traditional charity auction promoted by Fundão City Hall. In this edition, 33 cherries were sold for R$820, a price that ended up drawing attention to the start of the new agricultural harvest.

Symbolic auction that once again attracted attention

The first cherries arrived in the city center accompanied by the “Os Trinca Cerejas” motorcycle club, in a moment that symbolically marked the beginning of the harvest. According to the same source, the fruits put up for auction were chosen specifically for this solidarity action.

The amount raised will be given to the Portuguese Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Disabled Citizens, based in Fundão. The initiative has been repeated over the last few years and has become one of the most publicized moments associated with the start of the cherry campaign in the region.

Production affected by bad weather

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, producers face difficulties caused by weather conditions. The intense rain and hail episodes recorded during the month of May ended up affecting a considerable part of this year’s production.

According to the same source, losses can reach between 30% and 35% of the harvest. The numbers were put forward by Fundão City Hall, which admits relevant impacts on one of the most emblematic agricultural productions in the municipality.

Campaign that goes beyond fruit

The Fundão cherry continues, however, to play a central role in the region’s tourist and gastronomic promotion strategy. Over the next few weeks, several initiatives dedicated to the fruit and its derivatives will take place.

The program includes gastronomic promotion actions, experiences linked to regional confectionery and events aimed at promoting different uses of cherries. The objective is to keep the product associated with local identity and reinforce demand during the busiest months.

Investing in tourism during the harvesting season

The cherry campaign also has an important impact on regional tourism. The arrival of the picking season usually attracts visitors interested in visiting the orchards, participating in themed events and trying local cherry products.

The publication writes that the campaign should last until the end of July, a period in which the municipality expects to receive thousands of visitors. The cherry continues to function as one of Fundão’s main business cards during the hottest months of the year.

Symbol that continues to mark the region

Over the last few years, the Fundão cherry has consolidated itself as one of the Portuguese agricultural products with the greatest national recognition. In addition to fresh production, the fruit has been used in jellies, desserts, drinks and other gastronomic proposals.

According to the same source, the city hall intends to continue investing in the appreciation of the product, even in a year marked by losses caused by the weather. Cherry promotion continues to be seen as a way to support producers and boost the local economy.

Between tradition and the difficulties of the sector

The beginning of the campaign thus ended up bringing together two distinct scenarios. On the one hand, a charity auction that once again generated curiosity around a small batch of cherries sold for hundreds of euros. On the other, producers worried about the effects of hail and rain on a crop that has already suffered declines even before reaching peak harvest.

Even so, the region is preparing to maintain the tradition and extend initiatives dedicated to cherries in the coming weeks, at a time when the fruit continues to assume a central role in the economy and image of Fundão.
