Portimão City Hall once again marks World Bee Day, celebrated on May 20, through a series of initiatives dedicated to environmental awareness and valuing the importance of pollination for the balance of ecosystems.

The activities take place at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library and in several school libraries in the municipality, involving children, families and the educational community.

Paulo Santos presents “As Aventuras da Cuscas”

On the 20th, 21st and 22nd of May, beekeeper and writer Paulo Santos will present, in school libraries, the book “As Aventuras da Cuscas”, a work that addresses the universe of bees through five stories aimed at children.

On the morning of the 20th, the teams from Quinta Pedagógica de Portimão and the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library, in conjunction with the School Libraries, also promoted the installation of the second School Bioteca, this time at Escola EB1 in Mexilhoeira Grande.

Paulo Santos will also be at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library on May 22nd, at 9pm, for a presentation session of his books.

On May 23rd, at 10:30 am, the activity will be aimed especially at families with children between 4 and 10 years old.

During the session there will be a tasting of honey, mead and honey sparkling wine, allowing participants to learn about “some of the various by-products of honey”.

Municipality warns of risks that threaten bees

World Bee Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of pollination in plant reproduction and the preservation of biodiversity.

According to UN estimates, several bee species currently face a “100 to 1,000 times greater” risk of extinction due to human impact on nature.

The municipality emphasizes that the event also intends to draw attention to “the harmful human action in the use and abuse of pesticides”, as well as the proliferation of monocultures.

It also reminds us that bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, ladybugs and beetles, play an essential role in maintaining terrestrial flora and fauna.
