The first high-speed train should arrive in Portugal in 2031, connecting Lisbon to Porto in just over an hour and with the capacity to transport 500 passengers.
This Wednesday, CP launched a public tender for the acquisition of 12 high-speed trains. The procedure has a base value of 504 million euroswhich means that the unit cost per train cannot exceed 40 million, in addition to the services associated with the contract.
Proposals must be submitted by July 2nd. According to the Government, “after this period, 44 days remain for the decision on the qualification of competitors”. The signing of the contract is scheduled for the first half of 2027while the delivery of the first train should take place in the first quarter of 2031.
“If the expected schedule is met and delivery occurs at the rate of one train per month, the process will be completed within third quarter of 2032”, said the president of CP, Pedro Moreira”, says the president of CP, Pedro Moreira.
According to , , the tender includes not only the purchase, but also the maintenance of the 12 railcars intended for passenger transport. Each train will have to provide a minimum of 500 placesincluding spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility.
The new trains will also have areas for transporting bicycles, cafeteria service, infotainment systems, Wi-Fi access, USB-C sockets and video surveillance.
They must reach maximum speeds equal to or greater than 300 kilometers per hour and be prepared to operate on European railway networks, enabling future connections beyond Spain. They will also have to be able to travel on the traditional rail network, in order to connect locations that are not included in the high-speed circuit.
O signaling and speed control systemas well as the communication systemwill be compatible with the standards in force in Portugal and Europe. The Government is also preparing a public tender to establish a workshop responsible for maintaining these trains.
