The new American consulate in Nuuk is supposed to be proof of the growing influence of the US in the Arctic. However, the project divided local Greenlanders and caused tension in Danish-American relations.
The United States will open a new consulate in the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk on Thursday. TASR informs about it based on a report by Politico magazine.
The inauguration of the approximately 3,000 square meter complex in the center of the city sparked protests from local Greenlanders. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen announced to the Sermitsiaq newspaper that he would not participate in the event. US President Donald Trump reopened the US consulate in Nuuk during his first term in office in 2020. However, it was originally located in the building of the Danish Joint Arctic Command.
During his second presidency, Trump has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of a military takeover of Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded in January that such a move would mean the end of NATO. In December of last year, the head of the White House appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the envoy for Greenland affairs. He earned criticism from Denmark and the European Commission after he suggested that his task was to “make Greenland a part of the USA”.
