Good news for Slovakia?: Saková talks about a big deal that can open up new possibilities

The signing of the global agreement between the EU and Mexico is also good news for Slovakia. In Brussels, the Economy Minister of the Slovak Republic Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) stated this after the meeting of the EU Council for Foreign Affairs – trade segment, informs TASR reporter.

The EU and Mexico top officials signed the Modernized Global Agreement (MGA) and the Interim Trade Agreement at the 8th EU-Mexico Summit in Mexico City on Friday. The two sides agreed to deepen their political and economic cooperation at a time of growing global uncertainty.

Sakova pointed out that she has known about the upcoming signing of both agreements for a long time, the last time she talked about it personally with the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič. In Mexico, he accompanied the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the Head of EU Diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.

“I absolutely welcome his activities in recent months and recent years, as he is trying to open up new markets for Europe as Trade Commissioner. The agreement with Mexico will certainly help the European economy because a new market is opening up for us. After India, it’s the next big new market with huge strength,” said Sakova. She expressed hope that the trade agreement will be ratified as soon as possible and Europeans will be able to export their products there.

For the EU, Mexico is the second largest market in Latin America, however, as the minister admitted, Mexico is not in the case of Slovakia “top of the charts when it comes to business relationships”. “But of course, the discovery of new markets and such agreements mean that the barriers to free trade are being removed, and it will certainly be a challenge for some Slovak companies, in some areas.

So that together with SARIO, for example, we can prepare several business meetings, seminars, conferences and stimulate Slovak-Mexico cooperation a little more,” she described the situation. She reiterated that Slovakia is looking forward to this agreement, because as part of the European Union and unified trade policy, pwriting off the agreement with Mexico at the pan-European level will also help Slovak entrepreneurs and exporters.
