Over the course of five years, the Austrian national team defender won two Champions Leagues, two Spanish Championship titles and two Spanish Super Cups.
Austrian defender David Alaba will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, coinciding with the termination of his contract with the ‘merengue’ team.
The club and Alaba “have reached an agreement to end his time as a player” at the Spanish capital club “at the end of the current season”, Real Madrid announced in a statement this Friday (22).
Alaba, 33 years old, leaves the Madrid squad after five seasons at the club, having arrived in 2021 from Bayern Munich. Over these five years, the Austrian national team defender won eleven titles, including two Champions Leagues, two Spanish Championship titles and two Spanish Super Cups.
“David Alaba carries with him the affection of all Madrid fans for his dedication, his hard work and an iconic image of our journey towards the ‘fourteenth’, an image that symbolized the celebration of a victory and that has now become part of the history of our club”, said Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, quoted in the statement.
O merengue leader referred to the famous image of the Austrian player after the comeback victory against PSG, in the quarter-finals of the 2021–22 Champions League, a tournament that the Madrid team would end up winning.
After losing 1-0 in Paris and then falling behind early in the match in Madrid, a ‘Karim Benzema in hat-trick boosted the turnaround, qualifying Real Madrid for the quarter-finals.
Alaba celebrated the qualification by raising a chair in front of the entire stadium, an iconic image, remembered by all ‘Madridistas’.
“Real Madrid will always be his home,” added president Pérez. David Alaba, who has been hampered by injuries for the last three years, is now a free agentas he prepares to join the Austria squad, of which he remains captain for the 2026 World Cup.
