For many Slovaks, Switzerland is a symbol of fabulous salaries, but astronomical living costs go hand in hand with them. If you ever find yourself in the supermarkets there, looking at the shelves will quickly bring you back to reality. To the editorial office we heard from reader Monika, who visited Zurich during the 2026 World Hockey Championship. Local price tags clearly show why this Alpine country is one of the most expensive in the world.
Eggs are a perfect example. If you are looking for the absolute cheapest import alternative, for a package of 10 pieces, you pay approximately 4.10 euros and for a large 15-piece package, around 5 euros. However, you will experience a real shock if you want to shop ecologically and locally. Six pieces of homemade Swiss organic free-range eggs cost an unbelievable 6.40 euros. This means that one egg will cost you more than one euro.
Bread and dairy products are no better. You can buy plain white toast for about 2.40 euros, but if you get a taste for its dark or special American version, prepare almost 3.90 euros.
In the case of milk, on the other hand, there is a surcharge for Swiss quality. A liter of classic full-fat milk in a box costs around 1.90 to 2 euros, and if you reach for more premium milk in a bottle, the price will rise to 2.30 euros. Flavored milk drinks and yogurt drinks usually fall within the range from 1.35 euros to 2.80 euros for the best quality ones.
Relatively the most favorable prices can be found in the segment of classic yogurts. Regular yogurts or milk desserts cost on average around 1.05 euros to 1.15 euros per piece. In addition, if you come across shelves with yellow labels that indicate sale goods or discounts, you know reduce the price of basic yogurt to a pleasant 0.60 euros.
However, if you are vegan or lactose intolerant, Switzerland will severely punish your eating habits. Plant-based alternatives to milk are a luxury item here. The popular oat milk in the Barista edition costs approximately 3.50 euros per liter. And even its half 500 ml package will cost you 2.35 euros.
Other vegetable milks – whether soy, almond or oat – are they normally sell from 3.05 euros and their price, depending on the brand, goes up to a crazy 4.05 euros for a single box. PHOTO from the reader can be found in the gallery.
