For the second consecutive year, Gavião Peixotoin the interior of São Paulo, occupies (IPS) Brazil, a list released on Wednesday (20) and which measures the quality of life in Brazilian municipalities. With a score of 73,10 on a scale of 0 to 100, the city’s performance is supported by indicators that measure the direct result of public policies in areas such as health, education e basic sanitation.

Gavião Peixoto’s leadership is explained by the IPS methodology, which evaluates 57 indicators divided into three dimensions:

  • NBasic Human Needs;
  • Fundamentals of Wellbeing;
  • Opportunities;

Unlike indices that focus only on economic variables, the IPS measures final resultsthat is, whether the population has effective access to services that guarantee quality of life.

According to the report, the city presents high results in the Basic Human Needs dimension, which includes nutrition, basic medical care, water, sanitation, housing e personal security. The municipality also stands out in components such as access to basic knowledge e health e well-being.

Additional data indicate that the management of public services in a small city — Gavião Peixoto has just over 4,800 inhabitants, according to IBGE — favors the maintenance of positive indicators. The municipality presents low mortality rates e good literacy rates e school retention.

Although the IPS does not use Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as an indicator of social progress, the report points out that the local economic stability contributes to the investment in social areas. Gavião Peixoto houses a Embraer unitwhere aircraft such as the C-390 Millennium freighter and the Gripen fighter are produced.

The presence of the aerospace industry generates a high tax collection for the size of the population, which allows the public authorities to maintain the provision of services at levels higher than the national average. However, the IPS reinforces that GDP alone does not guarantee social progress, and it is necessary for wealth to be converted into real results for citizens, as occurs in the city of São Paulo.
